That’s what distance does to you.

Here’s some time,
Here’s some space.
Live it and enjoy it,
But life never stays the same for long.
So go ahead and live your today,
And when you look back,
Savor those memories of belonging and friends.
You’ll wonder what you’ve already missed.
That’s what distance does to you.

And then you step away-
Really step away-
And live on your own
For days or weeks or months.
You learn to breathe a different rhythm.
You can look back again,
With a smile that’s not so full of bitterness.
The good memories always shine the brightest.
That’s what distance does to you.

Remember that friend,
That one friend,
More like a brother,
Who lived and laughed and broke your heart.
And you grew apart in the end.
And one day, he gives you a call.
It’s not nearly as painful as you expected,
Except for the hollow space full of missed years.
That’s what distance does to you.

And now you’re here.
Hoping for a new start.
You’ve already counted the days.
There’s no way you’ll see everyone again before you go.
Because it’s time, soon, you know.
One change begets another,
And now’s your chance to change your world,
But you must leave behind the one you love.
That’s what distance does to you.

You’re stronger, braver,
With courage to face your fears,
Warmth to weather the storm.
Thicker skin,
Fiercest heart,
Broken and stitched back together.
You’ve loved and lost and chose to love again,
Because you know the world is both broken and beautiful.
You see, that’s what distance does to you.
